Beautiful Bruny Island..even in the wet!!!!!

BRUNY ISLAND HERE WE COME....

Onto the car and passenger ferry at Kettering we drove...all packed in so close to each other...no chance of getting out of your car if you were overweight and the ferry was sinking..(only i would think of that with all the beautiful views to look at ...even if shrouded in mist and rain...).

see the little life boat ..that is what got me thinking about the ferry sinking..now i ask you how many people would fit in there????? maybe it was just for the captain????

on land and off around the approximately 300 kms of coastline..this is Great Bay....with beaches like this...(shame it was pouring with rain...would have like a paddle and to do a shell search...boo hooo)

even this view was not spoiled by the rain and sea mist....

some of the best oysters are harvested here... didn't get to eat any though..but some one did...!!!!

a little shearing shed right on the road.. abandoned to the elements ....a gap in the side beckoned me....

"Himself" ....ever the conquering explorer... took this road over to Adventure Bay.....this pic only shows a mild section...i was so scared i forgot to use the camera until we were on the level ground...through the virgin bush on a graded "track" that was running with small rivers and rife with ruts and soft edges AND IN MY BEAUTIFUL LITTLE RED HYUNDAI i30 TO BOOT.....

But at least he bought me the best hot chocolate ever had here...the owner told us we had been really brave to come the way we did...usually only 4 wheel vehicles tackle that road..for the forestry only !!!!!

across the Neck ...Bruny Island is actually two islands joined by a narrow isthmus called The Neck.

some of the coastline can be wild and rocky too...

then there is the Chocolate and Fudge Factory

Nussecken slice .. didn't get to try this either...looked so yummy too...sigh..Oh well less on the hips....
the Bruny Is.Cheese Factory...we bought some of this cheese and the sour dough bread....yum

This yummy fruit loaf wasn't for sale it was outside the back door of the shop cooling by the brick woodfired ovens ....
we were told this was being made for the Salamanca Market on the next day..fruit loaf made with pig lard

another beach at Dennes Point ...

the letter box parade...Power Road...
apparently there is 700 full time residents who live on the island and then in the height of the tourist season this can swell to six thousand plus...

the rain on the deck of the "Mirambeena" the ferry that runs back and forth on the 10 minute crossing every half hour ..two hourly every day...

back to shore almost...love you Bruny Island and i will be back to explore again when the sun is shining on your shores....$30 return is not bad for a great day ...fill up the car with the kids ..what better way to explore an Island of Treasures....filled with Aboriginal Heritage and History that dates back to 1642...Abel Tasman ..then in 1777 Captain James Cook came ashore in the The Bounty at Adventure Bay and made contact with the Aboriginal peoples there but sailed on to Hawaii...
see i told you it is a great place to visit..maybe we will stay a couple of days and really explore next time...

  1. Gosh it really was a wet day! If you had attempted that road from the other side you would have see the sign warning that the road was suitable for 4-wheel drive only. When I stayed there about 20yrs ago the road was really good and commonly used but without forestry to maintain they quickly degrade and we declined to travel it when we were there last April. You got some gorgeous photos and like you, I want to go back again soon too.
